Fascinating underwater world is likely to be found on The Great barrier reef or under cyan blue waters in Indonesia and may be in north Czech ponds. I bet you would never guess that an underwater empire of fish, crustaceans, anemones and corals can be explored in an old baroque ridding hall.
In former ridding hall in Lednice castle there is the exposition Of Malawi aquarium that catches your eyes more than anything else does. The property itself looks more like a country-house than a proud architectural work of an Austrian architect Johan Bernhard Fisher from Erlach. It is hard to believe, that once a real “palace for horses” used to exist there. You must have a strong imagination to picture it all. Nowadays, the falling plaster and the grass, growing beyond control is what catch your eyes. From historical point of view, this property is more than significant. The riding hall is the oldest extant part of the castle.
Since May 1993, permanent exposition of Malawi aquarium has been situated there.
The reconstruction of baroque part of former stables took about a year, but the effort has paid off. On an area of 360 m2, you will find a complete “ocean” of aquariums. From behind the glass fish from African lake of Malawi and Tanganyika are scowling at you. A giant South American catfish, across the room, is demanding your attention. Predacious piranhas are threatening with, at least, biting off your finger, but vary-coloured reefs of corals will calm you down and allow you to dream. Moray eels, rays, turtles and others revive in fascinating world of darksome blue depths. In total 40 000 litres of water, sea as well as fresh-water animals from all-over the world live.
